Dr. Silva, Vice President, Structural Biology, has extensive experience in structural biology research. He held research and management positions in universities, government, and industry. He received his Ph.D. degree in Physics from La Plata University, Argentina. After post-doctoral training at the University of York, England and at Purdue University he returned for a brief period to Argentina where he was an Associate Professor at Universidad Nacional del Sur (UNS), Bahia Blanca. In 1991 Dr. Silva joined the Structural Biochemistry Program at NCI-Frederick, as a Director of Crystallography Laboratory where he directed research effort to investigate structural aspects of drug resistance to protease inhibitors. In addition to his research capacity at the NCI, Dr. Silva filled an important administrative role as Project Officer of the NIH beamline X9B, at the National Synchrotron Light Source, Brookhaven National Laboratory. In 2000, Dr Silva joined Tibotec Inc, as Head of Crystallography and Director of Information Technologies. His laboratory solved structures of HIV protease with many different inhibitors, and provided modeling and crystallographic support for the structure-based design of HIV fusion inhibitors. |
