Mr. Bassett is a leading national expert on corporate compliance programs. He has extensive experience in assisting health care organizations in the development, implementation, operation and assessment of compliance programs. His areas of compliance program expertise include: (a) board-level oversight of compliance programs, (b) executive-level management of compliance programs, (c) policy and procedure development, (d) hotline operations, (e) education and training, (f) issue identification and resolution, (g) risk assessment, and (h) compliance program effectiveness assessment. He is a specialist in corporate internal inquiries and investigations. Mr. Bassett is frequently called upon to provide seminars and educational programs to assist audit and compliance professionals in resolving compliance issues and problems, including how to respond to government investigations/inquiries, and how to conduct internal compliance inquiries and investigations. He is the lead SM consultant for the development of SM's methodology for measuring the effectiveness of corporate compliance programs, and for managing and conducting compliance program evaluations. Mr. Bassett served over 20 years as a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in a variety of field and executive assignments at FBI Headquarters. He was a "White Collar" crime and government program fraud expert. His management experience included service as the FBI's liaison to four Congressional oversight committees, service on the staff of the Director of the FBI, and service as the FBI Liaison to the Counsel/Deputy Counsel to the President and White House Office of Personnel Security. In 1990, he was appointed Assistant Inspector General for Investigations for the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and later Deputy Inspector General where he was responsible for a staff of 500 auditors and investigators that provided oversight and enforcement of all DOL programs, including ERISA, OSHA, labor health benefit plans, and the federal workers' compensation program. He also managed the legal activities for the OIG DOL and coordinated projects with the President's Council on Efficiency and Integrity (PCIE). Mr. Bassett received his Juris Doctor degree from the College of Law at Michigan State University and is licensed to practice law in the state of Michigan. He also earned a B.S. degree in Business Management from the University of South Carolina, and he attended the Senior Managers in Government Course, Harvard University. He served as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps.
