Andy Sugarman will serve as the Falcons Offensive Assistant after spending this past year out of the NFL. From 2004-05, Sugarman coached tight ends for the Detroit Lions under Steve Mariucci after serving one season as an Offensive Assistant for the team in 2003. In 2005, under Sugarman's direction TE Marcus Pollard led the Lions in receiving with 46 receptions for 516 yards and three touchdowns. Also, with Sugarman's help, TE Stephan Alexander and TE Casey FitzSimmons combined for 51 catches and 480 yards during the 2004 season in Detroit.
Sugarman arrived in Detroit in 2003 after five years with the San Francisco 49ers, including three years as the offensive assistant (2000-02) and two seasons (1998-99) as the Offensive Quality Control Coach.
Sugarman was brought to San Francisco by head coach Steve Mariucci as the team's Offensive Assistant. He assisted with the tight ends during his last two seasons (2001-02) with the 49ers.
During his first three seasons in San Francisco, Sugarman worked with the wide receiver position. In addition to his coaching duties with the 49ers, he also handled the computer operations, including game plans inputs and coordinated the scout teams for special teams.
Prior to joining the 49ers, Sugarman spent seven years (1991-97) as an assistant to the offensive and special teams coaching staff at the University of California Berkeley. He worked under four head coaches while at Cal, including Bruce Snyder, Keith Gilbertson, Mariucci and Tom Holmoe. Sugarman, a fourth generation Cal student, worked for the team while he was a student at Acalanes High School in Lafayette, California.
