The HONORABLE Beth A. Chapman has joined the firm's Trademark & Copyright Practice Group as Of Counsel. She is a former U.S. Patent & Trademark Office Trademark Trial & Appeal Board (TTAB) Judge. Ms. Chapman began her career at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office 32 years ago as an Examining Attorney. She eventually became Managing Attorney, a position in which she supervised more than 20 Examining Attorneys. In 1982, Ms. Chapman became an Interlocutory Attorney at the TTAB, handling motions in inter partes cases including motions to be signed by judges, such as summary judgment motions, motions for sanctions and motions to dismiss. Ms. Chapman was appointed as a judge to the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board in 1998, where she wrote decisions on ex parte appeals and inter partes cases after trial, including Genesco Inc. v. Gregory Martz; In re Consolidated Specialty Restaurants Inc.; and DC Comics v. Pan American Grain Mfg. Co. Inc. She also attended and presided over numerous hearings. During her tenure at the USPTO, she also lectured extensively on trademark issues ranging from prosecution to motion practice, and opposition and cancellation matters. Ms. Chapman received the Department of Commerce Bronze Medal award in 1996.
Ms. Chapman received her Juris Doctor from the University of South Dakota in 1973 and her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Dakota in 1970. Ms. Chapman is admitted to the South Dakota State Bar. She is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the District of South Dakota, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. She is a member of the Federal Circuit Bar Association. |
