Bob McCammon begins his fourth season with the Detroit scouting staff as the club's NHL Scout. Prior to joining the Red Wings, McCammon spent three years with the International Hockey League serving as the Vice-President and Director of Hockey Operations. Prior to his time with the IHL, McCammon served as assistant coach for the Edmonton Oilers from March 1995 through July 1998. McCammon originally joined the Oilers as the club's pro scout.
McCammon spent time with the Tri-City Americans of the Western Hockey League as the team's President and General Manager and Head Coach from October 1991 through November 1993.
His NHL Head coaching experience comes from time with the Vancouver Canucks (June 1987 through January 1991) and the Philadelphia Flyers where he served as GM and coach for the 1983-84 and 1984-85 seasons, Head Coach and Assistant GM (1981-82 and 1982-83) and Head Coach (1978-79). While with the Flyers organization, McCammon was credited with drafting players such as Peter Zezel, Rick Tocchet, Derrick Smith and Pelle Eklund.
Born in Kenora, Ontario, McCammon began his hockey career in the 1960-61 season with the Ft. Williams Juniors where he was named an All-Star defenseman. He went on to spend 11 seasons in the American Hockey League as a center for the Port Huron Wings playing 736 games (141-397-538).
McCammon retired as a player in 1973 and immediately began coaching the Port Huron franchise posting a career coaching record of 127-156-25 in 308 games coached. In 1977, he was offered a head coaching positing with Philadelphia's AHL affiliate the Maine Mariners. McCammon's first NHL experience came in 1978 when he was brought up to coach the Flyers for 50 games. He posted a record of 22-17-11 and returned to the Mariners late that season where he spent the next four years coaching.
