Brad McCrimmon, who enters his third season and fourth year with the Atlanta Thrashers, has more than 23 years of NHL experience as a player and assistant coach. He joined the team on June 2, 2003.
McCrimmon, who served as an assistant coach with the Frankfurt Lions of the German Hockey League in 2004-05, spent 2 1/2 seasons as an assistant coach with the Calgary Flames from the 2000-01 season until Dec. 3, 2002. McCrimmon also served as an assistant coach for Team Canada, which included Thrashers prospect Braydon Coburn, and helped the squad capture the gold medal at the 2003 World Under-18 Championships held at Yaroslavl, Russia. He also spent the 1997-98 season as an assistant coach with the New York Islanders following his retirement as a player.
McCrimmon played 18 seasons as an NHL defenseman, notching 403 points (81 goals, 322 assists) and 1,416 penalty minutes in 1,222 games from 1979 to 1997 with Boston, Philadelphia, Calgary, Detroit, Hartford and Phoenix. McCrimmon notched 30 or more points in a season four times in his career, including a career-best 56 for the Flyers in 1985-86. He also tallied career highs with 13 goals and 43 assists that season.
The native of Plenty, Saskatchewan, finished his NHL playing career with a plus-444 rating, which ranks ninth on the all-time list, including a league-best plus-48 for the Flames in 1987-88. His career-best plus-83 rating for Philadelphia in 1985-86 is tied for the 10th highest mark in NHL history. He finished with a plus rating in 16 of his 18 NHL seasons.
McCrimmon helped Calgary capture the 1989 Stanley Cup, and finished his NHL career with 29 points (11 goals, 18 assists) and 76 penalty minutes in 116 Stanley Cup playoff games. McCrimmon played in the 1988 NHL All-Star Game, and was a 1988 NHL Second Team All Star.
