Brad Smith completed his second season as the Avalanche's Director of Player Personnel, his 11th season overall with the organization.
Smith, 48, joined the Avalanche as a scout in 1995, just prior to the franchise's first season in Colorado. During his time with the Avalanche, he has served in multiple scouting roles, including both an amateur and advance pro scout.
Affectionately known in NHL circles as "Motor City Smitty", Smith brings two decades of NHL experience as both a player and scout to his current position. The Windsor, Ontario, native oversees Avalanche professional and amateur scouting operations and serves as a key aide to General Manager Francois Giguere in making all player personnel decisions.
After a National Hockey League career which spanned nine seasons with stops in Vancouver, Atlanta, Calgary, Detroit and Toronto, Smith traveled extensively during his first year away from hockey, heading out on a world-wide fishing excursion. Before he resumed his NHL career off the ice, Smith owned and operated a fishing charter on Lake Ontario outside of Toronto and continued to manage that business until 1996. Following his playing days, Smith coached his hometown Windsor Spitfires for two years before joining the Edmonton Oilers where he worked for then General Manager Glen Sather.
An avid golfer and fisherman, Smith and his wife, Joy, reside in Gig Harbor, Washington with their two daughters, Lexi (9) and Laynee (4). |
