Bret K. Clayton is Chief Executive of Rio Tinto Copper based in London. Mr. Clayton provides management oversight to the Copper group, which comprises Kennecott Utah Copper and Kennecott Minerals Company in the US, and interests in the copper mines of Escondida in Chile, Grasberg in Indonesia, Northparkes in Australia, Palabora in South Africa, as well as the Oyu Tolgoi copper project in Mongolia, the Resolution copper project in the US and the La Granja copper project in Peru.
Prior to his appointment as Chief Executive of Rio Tinto Copper, Mr. Clayton was the President and CEO of Rio Tinto Energy America, based in Gillette, Wyoming. Mr. Clayton was responsible for all North American energy-related business of Rio Tinto Energy, the global energy company of Rio Tinto plc in London, with a primary focus on coal.
Mr. Clayton began his career with the Rio Tinto group in 1994 as Director of Financial Accounting & Reporting with Kennecott Corporation in Salt Lake City. At that time, Kennecott Corporation managed the operations of Kennecott Utah Copper, Kennecott Energy Company (now Rio Tinto Energy America), Kennecott Minerals Company and Kennecott Exploration. During his career with the Rio Tinto group, Mr. Clayton has held numerous senior management positions, including Head of Financial Planning and Reporting for Rio Tinto plc in London and General Manager Commercial and Chief Financial Officer for Hamersley Iron and Rio Tinto Iron Ore in Perth, Australia. Prior to joining the Rio Tinto group, Mr. Clayton spent nine years at PricewaterhouseCoopers auditing and consulting to the U.S. mining industry with his last three years as PwC's Engagement Manager to Phelps Dodge Corporation.
Mr. Clayton holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Accounting from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and is a graduate of the International Executive Management Program of INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France. |
