Charles Bravo was named Senior Vice President, Intelligent Mail and Address Quality in January 2003. In this role, Bravo, a 30-year postal veteran, reports directly to the Postmaster General and is responsible for leading a new organization in intelligent mail planning and standards, intelligent mail implementation and address management. With the ultimate goal of enhancing value of the mail through innovative technology, Bravo is also responsible for setting new standards for coding, reading and mailer participation regarding the information placed on all types of mail, including envelopes, packages, trays, sacks and pallets and customer forms. Bravo's responsibilities involve close coordination with postal operations, engineering, marketing, finance and information technology.
He also represents the Postal Service externally. In 2005, Bravo was elected Chairman of the Standards Board of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), a specialized agency of the United Nations. With more than 190 member countries, the UPU is responsible for fostering the sustainable development of quality universal, efficient accessible postal services in order to facilitate communication among the people of the world.
Earlier, Bravo was Chief Technology Officer, responsible for the overall technology leadership and direction to increase the quality and value of postal services. Additionally, he also was Vice President, Information Platform. In this role, Bravo was responsible for the comprehensive information platform designed to enable the Postal Service to reduce costs through better management of resources while offering value-added services to our customers.
In 1998, he was named Manager, Technology Acquisition Management, responsible for the acquisition and deployment of more than $1 billion in new technology annually with major investments in automation, flats, vehicles, robotics and advanced material handling systems.
In 1992, he was appointed Manager, Environment Management Policy and implemented a strategy of leadership and compliance. In July 1994, Bravo was named Federal Environmental Engineer of the Year by the Conference of Federal Environmental Engineers. He also has assumed a leadership role on international postal issues by chairing two symposiums for the UPU and represented the UPU at the 18th Session of the Governing Council of United Nations Environment Program. In May 1997, Bravo received the Postal Service's Postmaster General Award and the White House Lifetime Achievement Award for his leadership on environmental initiatives.
Bravo was a Sloan Fellow and earned a Master of Science degree in management upon completion of the Stanford Sloan Program in 1992. Other formal education includes a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1971 and a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute in 1976. Prior to joining the Postal Service, Bravo was an engineer for the Corps of Engineers for three years.
