Clive Stanbrook is a partner in the international law firm of McDermott Will & Emery/Stanbrook LLP. He works from our offices in Brussels and Washington D.C. He is head of the Firm's EU Regulatory practice and a member of the European Competition and Trade groups. He is acknowledged as a leading / recommended expert in various directories, including Chambers & Partners' "The World's Leading Lawyers for Business", for his work in EU antitrust, international trade, litigation and arbitration. He specializes in advocacy, particularly in politically sensitive cases.
Clive has extensive experience in EU merger control proceedings, including MCI/BT, MCI WorldCom, KPMG/Ernst&Young and Ernst & Young/Cap Gemini. In cartel cases he has a distinguished track record before the Commission and the European Court of Justice that started with the paper pulp case and includes cases in the oil and gas, LDPE and vitamins sectors. He has organized and coordinated numerous filings in multiple jurisdictions for mergers and has advised clients on competition compliance and strategy. Also an experienced trade lawyer, he pioneered a trade practice in Brussels and has conducted anti-dumping cases and advised on WTO / International trade issues in many parts of the world. Over the years Clive has developed a substantial experience in providing EU law advice in a number of industries, including retailing, pulp and paper, textiles, engineering, chemicals, cement and the services sectors.
With particular expertise in Africa, Clive's work has included advising on the establishment of a joint Member State embassy in Abuja, Nigeria. He led the successful defense team for Dr Hastings Banda in the Mwanza trial in Malawi in 1995.
Co-author of "Dumping and Subsidies", now in its third edition (Kluwer, 1996); co-author of "Extradition - The Law and Practice" (now in its second edition - Oxford University Press, 2000); and co-editor of "International Trade Law and Practice" (Euromoney, 1990). He also writes and lectures on a variety of Community and International Trade topics. A former President of the British Chamber of Commerce for Belgium and Luxembourg, he was awarded the OBE for services to the British Industry in the EU in 1987 and he was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1989.
