Daniel F. O'Connell is a partner in the Corporate and Securities Practice Group and vice-chair of the Health Practice Group. Dan's practice focuses on health care matters.
Health Care Representation and Experience. Dan concentrates on institutional, corporate and medical staff health care matters, and has practiced health care law for 30 years. He has handled corporate mergers, restructuring and joint ventures. He also handles fraud and abuse matters, rate appeals, medical staff relations and serves as general and special counsel for numerous health care institutions. He has also represented medical staffs and medical societies in matters involving credentialing, physician discipline and corporate relations, and has represented clients in both federal and state courts as well as before federal and state professional licensing boards.
Affiliations. Dan is the former chairman of the New Jersey Commission on Legal and Ethical Problems in the Delivery of Health Care, known as the New Jersey Bioethics Commission. Appointed by former Governor Thomas Kean, this permanent commission was established to study and recommend methods of dealing with bioethics issues such as treatment of the terminally ill, surrogacy and other reproductive processes, AIDS and advancing technology. He has served and continues to serve on numerous international, national and state task forces and commissions.
Lecturer and Author. Dan is an author and frequent lecturer on medical/legal and bioethical issues. He has spoken to and presented papers to the American Health Lawyers Association, the New Jersey Hospital Association, the New Jersey Bar Association, the New Jersey Medical Society, and the Rutgers University Graduate Faculty of Management. He has participated in grand rounds and forums at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, St. Barnabas Medical Center, Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center, JFK Medical Center, Somerset Medical Center, Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center, St. Joseph's Medical Center and those hospitals included in the Atlantic Health System network.
In General. Dan is a member of the American Bar Association, New Jersey State Bar Section on Health and Hospital Law, a past president of the Somerset County Bar Association, a member of the American Health Lawyers Association and a member of the American Society of Law and Medicine. He has also been named in Business News New Jersey's "Who's Who: New Jersey's Business Leaders." |
