Experience:
Daniel Luther advises clients on key issues of corporate and individual tax, wealth management and administration. His practice especially focuses on estate planning and administration. He prepares estate plans, wills, and trusts for individuals, plans split-dollar insurance, and also prepares related individual income tax returns. In administration matters, Dan represents clients in the probate of decedents' wills and related court proceedings, prepares estate and gift tax returns, and advises on planning for tax concerns of estates and beneficiaries.
As part of his estates and trusts work, Dan handles related litigation on behalf of fiduciaries and individual clients. He has advised on claims of breach of trust, allegations of incompetence and undue influence, and claims of creditors against estates. Another significant part of his dispute resolution work involves claims of heirs, legatees and charities to distributions of certain assets from estates, as well as the related issues of trust and will construction.
In other tax-related matters, Dan serves as principal advisor to several large charities, private foundations, and a university on planned giving and tax compliance.
An additional area of Dan's client work centers on sports and entertainment law. He provides a professional sports team withadvice on tax, corporate, labor, and intellectual property law, and advises other client teams on stadium lease and development issues, team financing issues, and all aspects of National Football League governance. Daniel also represents investors in movie rights transactions, and advises individuals from both the entertainment and sports sectors in their personal affairs.
In 2003, Dan was designated a Leading Lawyer in two categories - "Trusts, Wills and Estate Planning Law" and "Arts, Entertainment and Sports Law" - by Leading Lawyers Network. He joined Mayer Brown in 1986.
Notable Engagements:
General Counsel of Indianapolis Colts, Inc., January 2001 to March 2003. Represented client, a professional sports franchise, in all facets of risk management and legal operations. Representation of client continues to date.
Sale of Best Access Systems, Fall 2002. Represented majority shareholder in sale of company to The Stanley Works for $310 million and settlement of related dissident shareholder's suit.
Estate of Robert Irsay, Circuit Court of Cook County, 1997. Represented the interest of decedent's son in estate dispute over family business against stepmother. One of the largest estate disputes in the Midwest during the 1990s, the case settled favorably, with the son retaining complete control of business.
Estate of Joseph L. Bernardin, Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois, 1996. Joseph L. Bernardin was the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Chicago.
