Judge Chandler was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, and moved with his family to Weir just before his first year of school. Judge Chandler graduated from Weir High School in 1964 and then attended Mississippi State University, where he earned his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in education. Subsequently, he spent twenty years in education, including almost ten years as a Research and Curriculum Specialist at Mississippi State University. Judge Chandler attended law school at the University of Mississippi where he earned his Juris Doctorate. Following law school, he practiced law in Tupelo and, in January 2000, his law firm opened a branch office in Ackerman. Judge Chandler represented the Board of Supervisors in Choctaw County from January until December 2000. He also served as municipal judge for his hometown of Weir from 1999 until 2001, when he assumed his duties as Judge on the Mississippi Court of Appeals. Judge Chandler was reelected to the Court in 2006 without opposition and continues to serve in that position. Judge Chandler was awarded a Master of Laws in the Judicial Process from the University of Virginia School of Law in May 2004, along with twenty-eight other state and federal judges from seventeen states. Judge Chandler is the first Mississippi Court of Appeals judge to complete this nationally acclaimed program. Judge Chandler has served on numerous committees including his service as Chairperson of the Court of Appeals Rules Committee and Co-Chairperson of the Professionalism Committee of the Mississippi Bar. He also serves as Adjunct Professor of Law at Mississippi College School of Law. Throughout his career, Judge Chandler has authored professional articles in the field of education as well as in the legal field. His most recent article was published in the professional journal for Mississippi Bar members in July 2007. The article addressed recent developments aimed at improving professionalism among lawyers. Judge Chandler is a member of the Tupelo Bar Association, the Mississippi Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Lamar Order, University of Mississippi School of Law. Judge Chandler prides himself on his carpentry skills. He and his wife, Glenda, reside in Ackerman, in their home which was constructed in the 1950's. They recently refurbished the home, doing most of the work themselves. Judge Chandler is the father of two sons, both of whom reside in Mississippi. He enjoys visiting with his grandchildren, who attend the DeSoto County school system where their mother is a teacher. |
