David C. Colby is executive vice president and chief financial officer for WellPoint, Inc. Areas reporting to Mr. Colby include budgeting and forecasting, financial reporting, accounting operations, mergers and acquisitions, financial and cash management functions such as Tax, Treasury, Investments and Accounts Payable, Investor Relations, Procurement, Real Estate, Risk Management, Facilities and the Special Investigations Unit. When Anthem, Inc. merged with WellPoint Health Networks Inc. in November 2004 and was subsequently renamed WellPoint, Inc., Mr. Colby was serving as executive vice president and chief financial officer for WellPoint. Appointed in September 1997, he was responsible for WellPoint's finance, treasury, mergers and acquisitions, investor and corporate communications, strategic planning, internal audit, facilities, associate safety, business continuity, sourcing and supplier performance and corporate risk control and assurance. During his tenure, the company's revenues grew from $5 billion to more than $20 billion.
With more than 25 years of health care management experience, Mr. Colby is one of the industry's leading chief financial officers. Prior to joining WellPoint, Mr. Colby was director, executive vice president and chief financial officer for American Medical Response ("AMR") in Aurora, Colorado. During his 18-month tenure at AMR, the company grew from a $700 million ambulance provider to a $1.3 billion health care services company, focusing on episodic care through the provision of medical transportation, emergency physician practice management services and nurse triage/advise services.
Prior to American Medical Response, Mr. Colby was senior vice president and chief financial officer and then senior vice president and treasurer at Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation where he led the financial functions of the company as it grew from a start-up operation to more than $20 billion in revenues. Before that, he served as senior vice president and chief financial officer at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas and was a health care consultant with Touche Ross & Co. (now Deloitte & Touche).
Mr. Colby received his bachelor of arts degree in biophysics from Columbia University in 1975, a Master of Business Administration and Master of Health Administration from Tulane University in 1978 and 1979 respectively. He is a certified public accountant and also sits on the Board of Directors of Ardent Health Services, Nashville, Tennessee. |
