Research Summary:

The presence of severe problem behavior (e.g., self-injurious behavior, aggression, property destruction, pica) is significantly more prevalent among individuals diagnosed with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities. Dr. Kuhns training and education has focused on the assessment and treatment of these problem behaviors, which interfere with adaptive functioning. His research has involved the application and adaptation of principles of applied behavior analysis towards skill acquisition and behavior reduction among individuals with developmental disabilities. Dr. Kuhns current research focuses on increasing behavioral repertoires (e.g., toy play and social skills) among individuals diagnosed with Autistic Disorder as an approach to both increase adaptive behavior and decrease problem behavior.
