David Barrett is the president and chief executive officer of Hearst-Argyle Television, Inc. He has held his current post since January 1, 2001. Previously, he was the president and Co-CEO along with Bob Marbut since June 1999. Prior to that he held the position of executive vice president and chief operating officer.
Before the August 1997 merger of Hearst Broadcasting and Argyle Television which created Hearst-Argyle, Barrett was a vice president of Hearst Corporation and deputy general manager of Broadcasting, with oversight responsibility for Hearst's television and radio operations, a television production company, and New England Cable News.
Previously, Barrett was vice president and general manager of Hearst's WBAL Division, including WBAL-TV and WBAL-AM/WIYY-FM. He joined Hearst in 1984, when he was named general manager of the Baltimore radio properties. Under his supervision, WBAL-AM and WIYY-FM became the top two performing stations in the Baltimore radio market. When he moved to WBAL-TV, he presided over the revitalization of Hearst's original TV station. Barrett was given additional responsibility for the Hearst radio group in 1985 and, in 1989, he assumed general corporate responsibilities for the Hearst Broadcasting Group.
Barrett's broadcast experience includes vice president and general manager positions with Doubleday Broadcasting in St. Louis, MO (KWK-AM/FM), and Washington, DC (WAVA-FM). Prior to joining Hearst, he was executive vice president of Doubleday Broadcasting, based in Washington, DC.
Barrett began his broadcast career in Chicago as a sales executive before relocating to Canada where he held senior management positions at radio stations in Montreal and Toronto. At age 24, Barrett was named general manager of CHOM-FM, in Montreal. Under his stewardship, the station became Canada's most listened-to and most influential FM radio station of the '70s.
Barrett serves on the boards of directors of Hearst-Argyle Television, Inc. and Hearst Corporation. He is also the recent past Chairman of the Board of Governors for the ABC Television Affiliates Association, comprised of ABC's 223 affiliated stations. He is also a board member of the Ad Council and of the National Association of Broadcasters. Past board affiliations include St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation (Baltimore, MD), The Associated Press Broadcasters, The ABC Radio Network Advisory Board, and The Maryland Health and Welfare Council. He has been active within a variety of charitable youth organizations over the years and also has devoted considerable time in support of his own children's scholastic and sports activities.
