David W. Smith has spent thirty years in executive roles providing products and services to the Education market. His management experience encompasses testing, training, software and publishing business units.
Most recently he served as the CEO of NCS Pearson, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pearson plc. NCS Pearson derived eighty percent of its revenue and net income from the Education sector. During Mr. Smith's two-year tenure as CEO, revenue grew fifty percent from approximately $800 million in 2000 to $1200 million in 2002. Net operating margins grew at a matching rate. Mr. Smith joined NCS Pearson in 1988 as Group Vice President, Education Systems Group. The Group's divisions sold data capture technology and application software to the K12 and Post secondary markets.
His most recent assignment, prior to being appointed CEO, was as President of NCS' Assessment and Testing Services. His executive responsibility covered three major divisions representing over $300 million in revenue. They included NCS Measurement Services Division, the nation's largest commercial processor of student assessment tests; the Assessments Division, a clinical testing business; and Virtual University Enterprises (VUE), an Internet-based electronic course registration and testing services business.
Before joining NCS, Mr. Smith spent fifteen years as a publisher of professional, technical and scholarly books and materials. He held the senior executive positions in McGraw Hill Corporation's Training Systems and College Divisions. Prior to that he held the senior sales and marketing management responsibilities at William C. Brown Group and Houghton Mifflin Corporation.
Currently, Mr. Smith serves on the Boards of Directors of Capella Education Company, Inscape Publishing and 4GLSchool Solutions. He is the past president and chairman of the Association of Test Publishers and a past director of the University of Iowa School of Business Board of Visitors.
He holds a M.B.A. from the University of Iowa, as well as a BA and MA from Southern Illinois University.
