Dave Barrett is a general partner with Polaris Venture Partners, focusing on investment opportunities in information technology, including particular interests in software, internet, ecommerce and physical security technologies.
Dave joined the venture capital world after a 22-year operating career. As director, chief operating officer, senior vice president and general manager for four publicly-held software and services category leaders during their periods of highest growth, he built and led teams which achieved dominant market share and enterprise value. His executive leadership experiences included consistent successes in development of operating teams, product development and revenue engines, as well as over 20 acquisitions/mergers.
Prior to joining Polaris, through March 2000, Dave served as chief operating officer of Calico Commerce. During his tenure, the company evolved from venture-backed startup to a $45M revenue, publicly-held corporation. Calico was one of the top-performing Initial Public Offerings of 1999 and the 6th most successful offering in the history of NASDAQ.
Earlier in his career, Dave served as senior vice president of worldwide operations for Pure Atria Software Corporation; a $150 million revenue market leader in software development automation, continuing in that role after the company was acquired by Rational Software Corporation for $1 billion in 1997. Dave also had a long career with with Lotus Development Corporation, a $1 billion revenue pioneer in enterprise software. Among many executive roles, he served as vice president of field sales and services.
Dave represents Polaris on the boards of 170 Systems, Confluence, Dataupia, Imprivata, Integrian, LogMeIn, and mValent, and is a past board member of Centra Software (NASDAQ: CTRA) and Archivas (acquired by Hitachi Data Systems). He serves on the Microsoft Venture Capital Advisory Board and on the Dana-Farber CancerInstitute Leadership Council.
