Sir David is currently chairman of Tate & Lyle plc and non-executive joint deputy chairman of Brambles Industries plc and Brambles Industries Limited. He has been a member of the UK Panel of Takeovers and Mergers since June 2001. Sir David has had a distinguished career in British industry. He joined GKN plc in 1970 as an accountant and became group finance director in 1982. He was appointed group managing director in 1987, and chairman and chief executive in 1988 before becoming non-executive chairman in 1997 until his retirement in May 2004. Other notable roles have included being a member of the National Defence Industries Council between 1995 to 2004; chairman of Courtaulds plc from July 1996 to Sept 1998; a non executive director of the Bank of England between March 1991 and May 1999; and chairman of the CBI Economic Affairs Committee from 1988 until mid 1994 as well as being a member of the CBI President's Committee from 1988 to 1996. Sir David is currently a non executive director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and chairman of the governing body of Shrewsbury School. Sir David was appointed a Knight Bachelor in the Queen's birthday honour list in July 1991. In July 1996 he received the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the German Federal Republic and in 1999 received the ICAEW Award for Outstanding Achievement.
