Professional Experience
In 1982, Dawn began her hospital career at Forbes Health System in Pittsburgh, PA, a large community hospital health system, where she held various positions. As chief executive officer of Forbes Metropolitan in 1990, she completed her first organization turnaround, directing an operations restructuring that resulted in the elimination of a multi-million dollar operating loss. Dawn served as senior vice president and chief operating officer of the health system until 1997, when she became executive vice president of Allegheny University Hospitals (AUH) in Pittsburgh, PA, one of western Pennsylvania's largest vertically integrated healthcare delivery systems. Her responsibilities included strategic planning, marketing, network development, joint venture and business development, merger planning, and reorganization under Chapter 11 bankruptcy court protection.
Since 1999, Dawn has been providing consulting services, including operational performance improvement, program development, strategic planning, and merger and acquisition advisory services to hospitals, healthcare systems, and physician practices. She has assisted clients in the development and execution of turnaround and restructuring plans within and outside of bankruptcy, serving both as court-appointed manager and interim chief executive officer of hospitals and health systems moving through management transition. Notable among these clients are CareGroup, a Boston academic medical system and Harvard teaching affiliate, Caritas Christi Healthcare System of Boston, and Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers of New York, where she has served as chief operating executive and chief restructuring executive of this $1.7B organization consisting of multiple hospitals, long term care facilities, a behavioral health network and New York state's largest hospital affiliated home care service. Dawn has also provided advisory services to healthcare lenders regarding troubled credits.
Representative examples of Dawn's consulting and turnaround management experience include:
Served as CEO and Chief Restructuring Officer of sole-community provider. Restructured the facility's debt, directed a full-scale turnaround of operations, designed and implemented a strategic plan for revenue growth, divested of non-strategic assets, and positioned the hospital for long-term survival.
Served as CEO and lead financial turnaround of urban teaching hospital, eliminating financial losses in excess of $14M annually.
On behalf of a large academic health system, lead a team charged with the closure of a community hospital, including the management of human resource issues, including collective bargaining agreements and employed physician contracts; management of all state regulatory issues with the Department of Public Health and the Attorney General; transfer of all patients in capitated risk arrangement; preparation and execution of orderly clinical services closure plan; development and execution of communication strategies and plans; and execution on recovery opportunities.
Developed a strategic plan for rationalization of clinical services across a multi-facility system to better manage capacity and improve overall financial performance of the organization.
Advised an academic medical center in its analysis and due diligence of an acquisition target.
Advised a lender in dealing with multiple at-risk credits.
