De Wayne graduated from Oklahoma University in 1962, being a member of the first Petroleum Land Management Class. He subsequently worked for Mobil Oil Company as a Landman in Roswell, New Mexico, for Tenneco Oil Company, supervising leasing activities in the Anadarko and Arkoma Basin areas of Oklahoma and Arkansas, for Inexco as Exploration Manager for the entire Rocky Mountain Region, appointed Executive Vice President of Sarkeys, Inc. in 1976 and then co-founded Nova Energy Corporation in 1978.
