Evans began his career as a roughneck, working on drilling rigs for Tom Brown, Inc., in the oil and gas fields of West Texas. Ten years later, he became CEO of this publicly owned energy company, a position he held until he was appointed U.S. secretary of commerce by President George W. Bush in 2001. Evans served in this role for four years, during which he was a strong advocate for the free enterprise system, free and fair trade, and responsible corporate stewardship. |
