Ambassador Faith Whittlesey, 68, has served on the Valassis' Board of Directors since January 1992. She is the Chairwoman of Valassis' Compensation/Stock Option Committee and a Valassis Executive Committee Member. Ambassador Whittlesey has had a long career in law, diplomacy and government at local, state and national levels. She has served as Chairwoman of the Board of the American Swiss Foundation, headquartered in New York, since 1989 and is also President of Maybrook Associates since 1998. She served two tours of duty as United States Ambassador to Switzerland from 1981 to 1983 and from 1985 to 1988. From 1983 to 1985, Ambassador Whittlesey was a member of the senior White House staff. Ambassador Whittlesey served as Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and as Special Assistant Attorney General in the Pennsylvania Legislature for two terms. Later, she was elected for two terms to the Delaware County Council, the governing body of a large suburban county bordering the city of Philadelphia, where she served, alternately, as Council Vice Chairwoman and Chairwoman. In November 1999, she was elected to a three-year term as Chairwoman of the Board of Overseers of the Institute of World Politics, a graduate school of statecraft and diplomacy in Washington D.C. and in 2002 was re-elected to the same position for an additional three-year term. Ambassador Whittlesey served as a member of the Board of Directors and the Compensation Committee of the Sunbeam Corporation from November 1996 until December 2002. She also served as a board member for Scott Paper and Nestle. Ambassador Whittlesey is a Phi Beta Kappa and cum laude graduate of Wells College in Aurora, New York, and holds a Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She has received three honorary doctorates and a Ford Foundation grant to attend The Hague Academy of International Law in the Netherlands. In 2003, she also received the Stratton Prize in Boston in recognition of her work to promote American-Swiss friendship. Ambassador Whittlesey�s vast experience in law and diplomacy is a valuable asset to the Valassis Board of Directors. In addition, she is active in the corporation�s initiatives and public relations. |
