Fermi Wang co-founded Ambarella Inc. in 2004 to drive innovation in video compression for hybrid digital cameras and define a new class of consumer products. Prior to founding Ambarella, Wang was CEO and co-founder of Afara Websystems, a startup that pioneered throughput computing for servers. Afara was acquired by Sun Microsystems in July 2002. The multi-core, multi-thread CPU design developed at Afara is the critical technology in Suns current roadmap for its UltraSPARC processors.
Before founding Afara, Wang held several senior management positions at C-Cube Microsystems. As vice president and general manager of the Home Media division, he had P&L responsibility for silicon solutions for the DVD, digital video recorder (DVR) and digital video distribution and production markets. As vice president and general manager of the companys codec division, he launched the companys MPEG codec business and served in both engineering and business management roles. During this time, Wang and his team were responsible for growing the business by 200 percent in two years and developing the worlds first MPEG codec chip.
Wang owns several digital video-related patents; one of them is accepted by MPEGLA as one of the key MPEG-2 and MPEG-4/AVC patents. Fermi Wang received his bachelors degree in electrical engineering from National Taiwan University and earned his masters and doctorate degrees in electrical engineering from Columbia University. |
