Fred Cantu came to Austin to study at the University of Texas and ended up falling in love with the place. Fred and his wife Laura have now lived in their "starter home" in south Austin for 20 years. They have two grown children and two growing grandchildren. Fred grew up in Brownsville in far south Texas and started his broadcasting career at the local radio station in 1972. He met his wife-to-be at the local junior college and the two married in 1976.
Fred has a Bachelor of Journalism degree from UT Austin, although he admits it took him 17 years to earn it. Stay in school kids!.
Fred has been voted Best TV Anchor in the Austin Chronicle reader's polls in 2003, 2004, and 2005. Fred and Judy Maggio tied for the award in 2006.
Fred has been on the air in Austin for 25 years starting at top radio stations like KLBJ-AM and KVET-FM. After moving to TV, he won a first place award from the Associated Press for his featuring reporting and was once honored as Grand Marshal of the Viva Cinco de Mayo Parade in San Marcos.
Fred loves his grandkids and makes it a point to see them everyday. And that's easy to do since his backyard happens to connect to their backyard.
Fred is also a satellite TV nut. He has half a dozen dishes on his roof that he uses to watch broadcasts from around the world.
