Gary is a seasoned healthcare professional with more than 27 years of practice management and health system integration experience. His primary expertise is in physician practice management and in helping align the interests of physicians and hospitals to optimize business and operational performance and achieve financial quality service and market goals. Gary has served a wide range of clients throughout the United States including medical groups ranging to more than 200 physicians community hospitals and national hospital systems. He has also worked with faith-based systems for-profit and not-for-profit foundation medical practices and management service organizations.
Professional Experience
Gary was previously a Partner of Physicians Strategies LLC where he worked with hospital systems and physician groups in the areas of strategy governance finance and operations. Prior to that Gary headed the St. Louis office's physician practice management consulting division as Principal of Clarke/Bardes Consulting Healthcare Group. Gary also served as Vice President of Operations for Partners First a subsidiary of Ascension Health and as Chief Executive Director for Columbia Park Medical Group and Chief Operating Officer of Park Nicollet Medical Center.
Representative examples of Gary's engagement experience include:
Served a multi-specialty 60-provider practice for a faith-based multi-hospital system. Gary improved the financial performance and restructured the organization. The project was designed to reduce operating subsidies by more than $5M through management structure redesign staff reductions implementation of a new incentive based physician compensation plan site consolidations revenue cycle process improvement and elimination of non-core services.
Served an 85-provider community-based primary care group of an academic integrated delivery system. Gary assessed the operational and financial performance and developed a restructuring and improvement plan. The project met the system's financial support goal of $4M.
Led the creation of a group practice for a non-profit public health district hospital and re-engineered the practice support processes including revenue cycle budgeting financial reporting and operational management. Gary developed an incentive-based compensation plan re-structured physician employment agreements and implemented a community physician recruiting program. He also redeveloped the medical facility which included an ambulatory surgery center extensive diagnostic imaging and primary and specialty physician services.
