George B. Rathmann has served as Nuvelo's chairman emeritus since September 2005 and formerly served as chairman of the board and a director since February 2000. Dr. Rathmann served as chief executive officer from May 2000 to March 2001, and also served as president from May 2000 to January 2001. Prior to joining Nuvelo, Dr. Rathmann was a founder of ICOS Corporation, a publicly held biopharmaceutical company, and served as its chairman until January 2000. While at ICOS, he also served as chief executive officer and president from September 1991 until June 1999. In 1980, he co-founded Amgen where he served as a director until 1993 and at various times also served as its chairman, president and chief executive officer. Dr. Rathmann was also associated with Abbott Laboratories, a healthcare products manufacturer, where from 1975 to 1977 he was director of Research and Development and from 1977 to 1980 he was divisional vice president. Dr. Rathmann received his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Princeton University.
