Mr George Mergos, is Professor in the Division Economics of Public Policy of the Department of Economics, University of Athens and Governor of the Foundation of Social Security, the main social security organization of Greece.
He studied economics at the University of Athens and has his M.Sc. from Oxford University and his Ph.D. from Stanford University in Applied Economics. He has research interests in Applied Micro-economics and has written extensively.
He served as Secretary General of the Ministry of Finance and Economy (2004-2007) with duties on economic policy and foreign trade. He joined the Department of Economics, University of Athens in 1986, he was a Researcher Economist at the World Bank, Washington D.C. (1983-1986) and a Research Assistant, Stanford University (1980-1983).
He has served on the Board of various organisations in Greece, member of the Competition Commission (1991-1995), Director of Sectoral Research in the Foundation of Economic and Industrial Policy (1990-1996), Consultant for the European Commission on development cooperation and for various international organisations. He has also been as Secretary General of the Ministry of Finance, Governor for Greece of the Black Sea Trade and Development Bank and Deputy Governor for Greece of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. He is, also, since 2005 on the Board of Public Power Cooperation.
Born in Greece (1948), he is married and has three children. |
