Description of Practice:
Gerben is a partner in our Century City office whose practice focuses on real estate development and finance. With over 30 years of experience in real estate matters, Gerben has represented all types of institutional lenders, investors, and developers in commercial and residential real estate transactions in California, including in development and construction projects. He has structured and documented CMBS loans, participating loans, land sale leasebacks, loans involving guarantees, letters of credit, shared appreciation, environmental indemnities, mixed collateral and multi-state collateral, as well as numerous joint venture transactions involving institutional investors for the acquisition and/or development of real estate projects. Furthermore, he has been active in negotiating and documenting numerous commercial and residential subdivision workouts, partnership restructuring and, where workouts have failed, in supervising foreclosures and bankruptcy proceedings.
Gerben is a frequent lecturer and author. His article "SNDAS and the Lenders" was recently published in Real Estate Southern California, and he was a panelist on "Hot Topics in Closing Issues" for the Deal Maker's Forum of the California Mortgage Bankers Association. Gerben has addressed the California Continuing Education of the Bar; the California, San Diego County, and Orange County Mortgage Banker's Associations; the Northeast Real Estate Life Counsel Group, and has served as a panelist for SOIR/LACRA on Distressed Property Syndrome and the Mortgage Banker's Association of America on Closing Commercial Real Estate Transactions.
Gerben is a member of the California Mortgage Banker's Association, the Mortgage Banker's Association of America, and the Real Estate Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association.
