Gertrude Svarny was elected to the Board of Directors in 1981. She served two full-terms to 1987, during which time she served as Vice President in 1983 and 1984, Co-chairman and Acting President in 1984, and as Chairman in 1985 to 1986. After a small break, she was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Board in 1990 and has served ever since. Her current term began in 2005 and expires in 2008.
Gert serves on the Budget and Audit committees. Additionally, she serves as President of Dutch Harbor Development Corporation and of Little Brazil Corporation, both wholly-owned subsidiaries of Ounalashka Corporation.
Since 1980, Gert has been a self-employed artist. She works with ivory, stone, wood, and bone, and weaves traditional Unangan baskets. Her work has been shown internationally, and is included in collections owned by the Anchorage Museum of History and Art, British Petroleum, Ounalashka Corporation, the City of Unalaska, and Unalaska City Schools. As a weaver, she mentors at Camp Qungaayux^, also working with participants in fish preparation. She is a member of the Holy Ascension of Christ Orthodox Cathedral Church Council. A retrospective of Gert's work was held at the Museum of the Aleutians. It opened on June 2, 2006, and ran until mid-August 2006. |
