Glenn Murphy 45 was selected in July 2007 to serve as Gap Inc.'s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer and as a member of the company's Board of Directors.
With more than 20 years of retail experience Murphy has successfully led diverse retail businesses and brands in the areas of food health and beauty and books. He has an established track record as a decisive in-charge leader who has revitalized established retail brands.
From 2001 to 2007 Murphy served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Shoppers Drug Mart Canada's largest drug store chain. During his tenure at the 45-year-old company Murphy re-energized the brand by delivering innovative marketing strategies new products and services and improved operations. Under his leadership from 2002 through 2006 earnings per share doubled. The company also achieved 22 consecutive quarters of year-over-year revenue growth. During his tenure Murphy also spearheaded Shoppers Drug Mart's successful public offering and the company became one of the top performing stocks on the TSX Canada's largest exchange.
Before his appointment at Shoppers Drug Mart Murphy served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Chapters Canada's leading book retailer. In addition to repositioning the chain's 300 retail stores and fine-tuning its merchandising strategy he introduced many new product lines which earned positive consumer response and generated higher margins.
Prior to these roles Murphy had a 14-year career with Loblaw Companies Ltd Canada's largest food distributor and supermarket chain. During his tenure he held positions of increasing responsibility in category management marketing procurement and operations. He led the successful resurgence of the Loblaw business in Canada's Atlantic region and subsequently became Executive Vice President of Loblaws Supermarkets in 1997 during a time when the company delivered new store concepts and successfully expanded its focus on private label products. During his time with Loblaw Murphy was responsible for successfully restructuring and integrating Provigo a CAD$6 billion food retailing business into the Loblaw holding company.
Murphy began his career with A.C. Nielsen the world's leading marketing information company where he worked with numerous consumer goods companies and leading retailers.
