As managing director Global Crossing's Latin American region Hector R. Alonso brings nearly 30 years of international experience to his role overseeing Global Crossing's strategy and operations across Latin America. His responsibilities include leading the region in achieving its business goals and ensuring that Global Crossing's newly expanded presence in Latin America is closely aligned with the global organization.
Mr. Alonso was named managing director in May 2007 after Global Crossing's acquisition of Impsat Fiber Networks. Mr. Alonso who has an extensive background in the telecommunications industry previously served as chief financial officer of Impsat in which capacity he was responsible for finance administration planning human resources and information management systems. During 2002 Mr. Alonso was pivotal in guiding the company through a successful and speedy restructuring process following which the company increased EBITDA from $40 million to more than $65 million.
Prior to becoming chief financial officer Mr. Alonso served as chief operating officer for Impsat in Latin America and the U.S. and president of its Colombian operations. Under his watch as COO revenue increased by more than 250 percent. Mr. Alonso also played a critical role in the issuance of $650 million in high yield bonds as well as a successful initial public offering of $240 million.
While president of Impsat Colombia Mr. Alonso was responsible for a major turnaround in the business bringing EBITDA from negative levels in 1993 to more than $16 million in positive EBITDA by 1996. He also negotiated critical long term contracts with the major incumbent carrier paving the way to Impsat Colombia's growth from 8 percent market share to more than 35 percent during the same period.
Prior to his tenure at Impsat Mr. Alonso was managing director of Lime S.A. a waste management company in Colombia and held other key positions in the Pescarmona group of companies.
Mr. Alonso holds a masters degree in international business from the Universidad Argentina de la Empresa in Buenos Aires. He is fluent in English Portuguese and Spanish. |
