Helmut Wieser is an executive vice president of Alcoa and Group President responsible for Alcoa's global mill products rigid packaging and hard alloy extrusion businesses. He also oversees Alcoa's businesses in the Asia Pacific region with a focus on China the Australian rolled products businesses and Alcoa's operations in Russia. The new group includes Alcoa's worldwide rolled products hard alloy and rod and bar extrusion products and commercial foil businesses accounting for an estimated $8 billion in 2005 revenue and approximately 28 000 employees. In addition Helmut is a member of the Alcoa Executive Council the senior leadership group that provides strategic direction for the company.
Helmut joined Alcoa in 2000 as vice president operations for Alcoa's flat-rolled products group in Europe based in Geneva and a year later was name President of the group. He was elected a vice president of the corporation in 2004 when he was named president of the North American and European Mill Products organization and was elected an executive vice president in 2005.
Before joining Alcoa Helmut who is a native of Austria worked for Austria Metal Group (AMAG) for 10 years holding a series of management positions in its rolled products unit culminating in 1997 as executive member of the board and chief operating officer. As chief operating officer he was accountable for AMAG's share in the Alouette aluminum smelter in Canada and for its participation in the HAW aluminum smelter in Hamburg Germany. He was also responsible for AMAG's metal management and hard alloy extrusion businesses. Earlier he held several senior management positions with Voest Alpine in Austria and Venezuela including president of Voest Alpine Venezuela.
He serves on the board of governors of the International Graduate University in Washington D.C. on Capitol Hill. He is the former chairman of the Rollers Division of the European Aluminium Association and previously served as a lecturer at seminars on lean manufacturing and continuous improvement in Germany and Austria along with the Kaizen Institute of Japan the premier consulting firm on lean manufacturing.
Helmut was an Olympic athlete representing Austria in the Modern Pentathlon event in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. He was born in Steyr Austria on October 11 1953 and received a master's degree in mechanical engineering and economics in 1981 from the University of Graz. |
