When Herman J. Russell was 16 years old, he bought a small parcel of land on which be built a duplex. You could say he's always possessed a rather strong ambition. A few years later, after graduating from Tuskegee University, he returned to Atlanta to work alongside his father as a plastering subcontractor. In 1953, the son extended his father's business into general contracting. H. J. Russell & Company was born. Since that time and through some of the most tumultuous years in the history of the civil rights movement, Herman J. Russell built one of the greatest success stories in America - let alone in the African American culture. He has left a powerful legacy and a lasting impression on the communties in which he has worked. Some of our nation's most celebrated skylines bear his imprint. Many major municipal projects could not have been realized without his input. Some of our cities' most difficult and troublesome areas have become proud neighborhoods because Herman J. Russell brought he strength of his leadership to the forefront. Over the course of his career, Herman J. Russell has received many awards and honors. He also serves on the Boards of many leading corporations and organizations across the Southeast including Citizens Trust Bank, Georgia Power Company, Wachovia Bank, Georgia Ports Authority and the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, to name a few. |
