Mr. Birndorf is Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of Nanogen, Inc. He has also co-founded and served in senior management roles at a number of successful biotech companies, including Gen-Probe, Director and EVP; Hybritech, VP, Corporate Development; IDEC Pharmaceuticals, Director; and Ligand Pharmaceuticals, President, CEO, and current Chairman Emeritus. Mr. Birndorf was also involved in the formation of Gensia (Sicor), where he served as founding Director. He was a founding investor of Kiyon, a founding Director of Neurocrine Biosciences, and President of Birndorf Technology Development, an investment and consulting company. Mr. Birndorf is currently Chairman of the Board and founding Director of FasTraQ, Chairman of HA Cell Technology and Chairman of Oy Jurilab, a Finnish genomics company. He serves on the advisory board of Scripps Clinic-Green Hospital and was on the Board of the University of California San Diego Cancer Center. He received the Life Sciences Legend Award at bioFusion 2002. Mr. Birndorf received his B.A. in Biology from Oakland University, an M.S. in Biochemistry from Wayne State University, and has received honorary Doctor of Science degrees from Oakland University and Wayne State University. |
