James A. Friedman is team leader of the Insurance Practice Group and a member of the Litigation and Media Practice Groups in the Madison office. He practices in the civil litigation area with an emphasis on media law, appellate litigation, insurance coverage, insurance liquidation and guaranty fund work. Before joining the firm, James served as the law clerk to Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Donald W. Steinmetz. He is the co-author of five chapters in the Media Law Resource Center's "50-State Survey of Libel and Privacy Law," the Reporter's Committee for Freedom of the Press, 50-state Compendium of Shield Laws, the NAIC Receivers Handbook for Insolvencies, the NCIGF Annotated Model Insurance Guaranty Act, and the article "State Constitutions: The Shopping Mall Cases," published in the 1998 Wisconsin Law Review. James earned his undergraduate degree with high honors from Georgia Tech in electrical engineering in 1988. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School and received a Master of Public Affairs from the University of Wisconsin in 1992. James is admitted to practice before all Wisconsin courts, state and federal; the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit; and the U.S. Supreme Court. He is a member of the American Bar Association (Communications Law Forum), the State Bar of Wisconsin (Media-Law Relations Committee, Chair), and the Dane County Bar Association. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation and The Progressive Magazine (Treasurer). James is a past board member and president of Community Housing & Services, Inc. (n/k/a Porchlight). He was one of the founding members of the James E. Doyle American Inn of Court and served as Program Coordinator for two years.
