James A. Sheriff is a partner at Godfrey & Kahn, where he leads the Financial Institutions Practice Group and is a member of the firm's Board of Directors. Jim's legal experience has been principally in the financial institutions area, where his expertise includes retail banking and commercial law, consumer credit, electronic commerce and internet banking operations, mergers and acquisitions, securities offerings, bank holding company regulation, trust and investment services, and new bank charters. His clients include many bank holding companies, banks and savings associations, credit card companies, mortgage banking companies, trust companies, trade associations and financial services processing companies. He previously was Vice President and General Counsel of Marine Bancorp, in Erie, Pennsylvania. Jim and Godfrey & Kahn currently act as General Counsel to the Community Bankers of Wisconsin, a trade group of independent community banks. Jim has taught, written and lectured frequently on financial services topics for organizations including the American Institute of Banking, American Bankers Association, Consumer Bankers Association, Wisconsin Bankers Association, Community Bankers of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Mortgage Bankers Association, Florida Bar Association, Pennsylvania Bar Institute, Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the American Banker. His articles have been published in the American Banker and Wisconsin Banking News.
Jim is a member of the American Bar Association's Banking Law Committee and Consumer Financial Services Committee, as well as the Lawyer's Council of The Financial Services Roundtable, a Washington, D.C. based trade group representing the nation's largest financial services companies. He served for three years on the Duke Law School Alumni Association Board of Directors, and also serves on the Advisory Board of the Sarah Duke Gardens in Durham, North Carolina. Jim graduated with distinction in 1979 from the Duke University Law School, where he was on the Board of Editors of the Duke Law Journal and was elected to the Order of the Coif. He received his undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, from Boston University. Jim was included in the "Best Lawyers in America 2006," for his expertise in Financial Institutions Law, and was recently named a "Wisconsin Super Lawyer."
