James M. Timmerman has a broad range of substantive legal experience and has significant litigation and trial experience in State and Federal Courts within Maryland and in numerous jurisdictions across the country, as well as in alternative dispute resolution proceedings. Mr. Timmerman is both a trial and appellate lawyer whose practice areas include commercial and business litigation, employment issues, products liability, construction litigation and insurance coverage. Mr. Timmerman has served as defense counsel to numerous manufacturers whose products include aerial lift equipment, industrial drying equipment and power tools. Mr. Timmerman has also served as coverage counsel regarding insurance matters for various manufacturers. In addition to his litigation practice, Mr. Timmerman works with individuals and entities involved in the importation of foreign manufactured vehicles on a variety of issues related to importation and licensing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In recent years Mr. Timmerman has been involved in some significant appellate decisions. Mr. Timmerman was also involved in a recent decision by the Maryland Court of Special Appeals involving the proper scope and effect of a narrowly drafted arbitration provision. In addressing a myriad of issues related to the proper interpretation of the narrowly drafted arbitration provision, the Court of Special Appeals of Maryland clarified the proper analysis to be undertaken by a Trial Court considering the scope of a commercial arbitration provision. [Redemptorists v. Coulthard Services, Inc., 145 Md. App. 96 (2002)] Prior to joining Miles & Stockbridge, Mr. Timmerman worked as an associate in the Baltimore office of Eccleston & Wolf, P.C., where he focused on employment law and the defense of professional liability claims. As a former assistant public defender for Baltimore City, Mr. Timmerman also provided defense services to indigent persons charged with criminal offenses.
