Mr. Mitchell specializes in tax and estate planning, and trust and estate administration for individuals, families and closely held businesses. Estate Planning Mr. Mitchell counsels clients in structuring their financial affairs to accomplish their estate planning and charitable giving objectives while minimizing their tax exposure. His clients work with an expert who is adept at finding solutions to the complex issues and circumstances unique to each case. Mr. Mitchell's expertise includes charitable remainder, grantor retained annuity, educational and personal residence trusts, family limited partnerships, generation-skipping transfer tax planning, life insurance consultation and irrevocable life insurance trusts, and the creation of foundations and other non-profit entities, as well as traditional wills, trusts, and durable powers of attorney in asset management and health care. Estate and Trust Administration In addition to his estate planning practice, Mr. Mitchell represents both individual and institutional fiduciaries with probate, post-mortem and lifetime trust administration, court and non-judicial accountings, and the establishment, maintenance, and monitoring of trust and estate accounts. Mr. Mitchell also assists his clients in the preparation of federal and California gift and estate tax returns and in resolving controversies with the IRS and other taxing authorities in connection with gift and estate tax filings. Income Tax - Mr. Mitchell also counsels individuals on the income tax consequences of various tax planning options, including diversification strategies and equity compensation issues. Professional Activities - Mr. Mitchell serves on the Professional Advisory Committee of the Peninsula Community Foundation, is a member of the Taxation and Real Property, Probate and Trust Law sections of the American Bar Association, Taxation and Estate Planning, Trust and Probate sections of the California Bar Association, and the Bar Association of San Francisco, and is a member of the San Francisco Estate Planning Council. Education - Mr. Mitchell received his undergraduate degree in finance from the University of Santa Clara in 1981 and a Master's degree in Business Administration from Golden Gate University, San Francisco in 1983. He earned his law degree with honors from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, San Francisco in 1987, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif and the Thurston Society. |
