James R. Young is president and chief executive officer of Union Pacific Corporation, a position he was elected to in November 2005. Prior to this appointment, Young was president and chief operating officer of Union Pacific Railroad, a position he was elected to in January 2004. He was elected a director of Union Pacific Corporation in February 2005.
Young began his railroad career with Union Pacific in 1978 and has held a variety of professional, managerial, and senior management positions. In 1995, he was named vice president, Re-engineering and Design, and in 1997, vice president, Customer Service Planning and Quality. Young was named senior vice president and corporate treasurer of Union Pacific Corporation in 1998, senior vice president, Finance and corporate controller in March 1999, and executive vice president, Finance and chief financial officer of Union Pacific Corporation in December 1999.
Young serves on the boards of Creighton University, Joslyn Art Museum, Grupo Ferroviario Mexicano, and the Association of American Railroads. He has served as area chairman of the United Way of the Midlands campaign cabinet, and has served on the boards of Girls Incorporated and the Nebraska Council on Economic Education.
Young is a graduate of the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
