James S. Phalen is executive vice president and head of State Street's North American investment servicing group. In this role, he oversees strategy, operations and business development for State Street's industry leading investment services for mutual, public, pension and hedge funds as well as nonprofit and insurance customers in the United States and Canada. Mr. Phalen, former head of State Street's benefits services division, returns to the company after spending five years as chairman and chief executive officer of CitiStreet, one of the largest global benefits delivery firms in the country.
Prior to joining CitiStreet, Mr. Phalen spent eight years in senior roles at State Street, most recently as head of its benefits services division. Prior to this role, he was president and chief operating officer of Boston Financial (BFDS), a joint venture of State Street and DST Systems, Inc.
Mr. Phalen holds degrees from Boston College and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking. He is a graduate of the Executive Development Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management.
