Experience
James W. Bartlett III has been a litigator for over thirty years, with his areas of concentration being civil litigation, maritime law, products liability, construction litigation, professional (lawyers, architects and engineers) liability, premises liability, insurance coverage, commercial litigation, asbestos litigation, and appellate practice. He argued before the United States Supreme Court in 1995.
Mr. Bartlett currently serves as Secretary of The Maritime Law Association of the United States. He served on its Board of Directors from 1998 to 2001 and was the Chair of its Committee on Practice and Procedure from 2000 to 2004. He is a past Chair of the Admiralty and Maritime Law Committee of the Section of Tort and Insurance Practice of the ABA, a past Chair of the Admiralty and Maritime Litigation Committee of the Section of Litigation of the ABA, and a member of the Federal District Court Liaison Committee of the Maryland State Bar Association. He also is a member of the Bar Association of Baltimore City.
Mr. Bartlett is a member of Maryland Defense Counsel and the Defense Research Institute and is a permanent member of the Judicial Conference of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. He is an Associate Editor of American Maritime Cases, a subscriber of the Association of Average Adjusters (United Kingdom), a resident associate of the Association of Average Adjusters of the United States, and a past President and Director of the Propeller Club of Baltimore. He serves on the Boards of Directors of the Baltimore Maritime Exchange and the Baltimore Propeller Club Charitable Trust. He is listed in Best Lawyers in America, and Who's Who in America.
