Law Practice Janice Whelan Shea joined the firm on March 12, 2007 as an Associate in the Municipal Law, Land Use and Environmental Compliance group in the Garden City office where she represents both private and public sector clients in a variety of matters. Ms. Shea focuses her practice on zoning, land use, real property and municipal law. Ms. Shea handles the representation of municipalities and serves as counsel to several planning and zoning boards. Ms. Shea conducts legal research, drafts opinions and provides advice to both municipal and individual clients regarding contracts and land use.Professional Profile Before joining the firm, Ms. Shea served as an Assistant Islip Town Attorney where she defended the Town in Article 78 matters in State and Appellate Courts. Most recently Ms. Shea served as Counsel to the Islip Zoning Board of Appeals. Prior to her tenure in Islip, Ms. Shea served as an Assistant Suffolk County Attorney in the General Litigation Bureau and handled aggressive and reactive motion practice on behalf of municipal departments such as the Suffolk County Treasurer, Public Works, the Police Department in courts ranging from small claims to the Second Circuit in the practice areas of bankruptcy, land use and employment in state and federal courts.Education Ms. Shea graduated from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Ms. Shea received her Juris Doctor degree from Touro College, Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center. She was a member of the Moot Court Honor Society where she was appointed Program Editor. Ms. Shea spent her second summer of law school abroad in Oxford, England where she studied Criminal Procedure. Ms. Shea also participated in a short student exchange with Bar-Ilan University in Israel. During law school, Ms. Shea participated in several judicial internship programs at which time she researched and wrote legal memoranda in the Suffolk County Family Court as well as the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.Admissions Ms. Shea is admitted to practice law in the State of New York, Second Department.
