Jay Sumner focuses his practice in the arena of labor law. He concentrates most of his time on collective bargaining and representation elections in industries including manufacturing, warehouse and distribution, freight, transportation, hospitality, correctional institutions, health care and airlines. Jay also handles unfair labor practice charges, arbitration hearings and decertification elections on behalf of his clients and has appeared or handled matters involving the National Labor Relations Board, the National Mediation Board, the Federal Labor Relations Authority, the Ontario Labour Relations Board and the Nova Scotia Labour Relations Board. Jay also works with companies on the labor and employment aspects of plant closings and the purchase, sale, or merger of a business.
Throughout his career, he has worked with corporate clients to develop policies and procedures to address labor relations issues to ensure a positive work environment and consults regularly with companies on lawful employment practices and other workplace issues. Jay speaks regularly and conducts trainings around the country for the public and in-house for corporations on positive employee relations and how to effectively manage a business in a unionized setting.
During law school, Jay was a member of the University of Tennessee Law Review.
