Jean-Ren� Fourtou, born on June 20, 1939 in Libourne, France, is a former student of the Ecole Polytechnique.
In 1963, Jean-Ren� Fourtou was a management consultant at Bossard & Michel. In 1972, he became Chief Operating Officer of Bossard Consultants and Chairman in 1977.
In 1986, he was appointed Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of the Rh�ne-Poulenc Group. From December 1999 to May 2002, he served as Vice-Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of Aventis. He is also the Honorary Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce.
