Jerry Lane was named vice president of Area Operations for the Capital Metro Area in September 2006. Reporting to the deputy postmaster general and chief operating officer, Lane is responsible for 54,600 career employees in Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and the District of Columbia. Employees of the Capital Metro Area deliver more than 9.9 billion pieces of mail annually to more than 10.7 million addresses. Lane oversees an annual budget of $5.1 billion.
Appointed manager of Capital Metro Operations in 2002, Lane earlier served as the Capital District manager in Washington, D.C., where his leadership contributed to outstanding service performance despite many challenges resulting from the anthrax attacks of 2001.
He has held a wide variety of positions in the Postal Service and began his postal career in New York City, where he served as supervisor of mails, general supervisor, tour superintendent and manager of distribution operations. He also served as plant manager of the Queens Processing and Distribution Center.
Lane came to the Capital Metro Area as manager of the Baltimore Processing and Distribution Center in 1998. He was later promoted to Baltimore District manager and in March 2000 was named Capital District manager in Washington, D.C.
Lane holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from John Jay College. He is an accomplished musician and has played the drums for many years.
