Jimmy Van Alen is president and chief operating officer at CourseAdvisor. He oversees the financial and operational aspects of the Company and shepherded the company through its first institutional round of financing in 2006.
Before joining CourseAdvisor, Jimmy was executive in residence at the Slater Technology Fund, where he evaluated investment opportunities for and advised companies in the Slater portfolio. Prior to The Slater Technology Fund, Jimmy was vice president of finance and operations at Incipient, Inc., a venture-backed storage software company, where he was responsible for overseeing all of the company's financial, operational and legal activities as it grew from 10 to 50 employees. During that time, Jimmy raised $19 million in equity and debt financing and was active in strategic planning, corporate marketing and business development at the company.
Prior to Incipient, Jimmy was a vice president at the venture capital fund RAF NetVentures, L.P., where he evaluated investment opportunities, managed deal flow, conducted due diligence, managed outside funding sources, liaised with legal counsel and served as an advisor to the firm's portfolio companies. Jimmy also founded and served as president of Greenlight Services Corporation, and held research and analysis positions with Strategic Advisors International, an investment banking advisory firm.
Jimmy holds a BA in economics from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA (summa cum laude) from the F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson College, where he was the Andrew H. Kalnow Venture Capital Fellow, a Ralph Z. and Charlotte R. Sorenson Scholar and winner of the Douglass team-based business plan competition.
Jimmy's appreciation for the finer things in life, ethereal as well as pecuniary, is underscored by his 20-something tenure as the art, theater and movie critic at an English-language daily newspaper on the island of Cyprus also known as the Golden Apple of the Mediterranean. |
