Jocelyn D. Francoeur is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Firm�s Chicago office. She is a member of the Trial Department.
Jocelyn has experience in a wide variety of civil matters in state and federal trial courts and courts of appeal, including contract disputes, business torts, products liability claims, and securities fraud. Jocelyn has also represented clients in all phases of criminal litigation.
Jocelyn is active in pro bono matters and is a member of the firm's Pro Bono Committee. She has defended clients facing federal criminal charges and recently argued a Seventh Circuit appeal on behalf of a pro bono client that resulted in a reversal of the client's criminal conviction and remand for a new trial (United States v. Vasquez-Ruiz, Case No. 06-2180 - 7th Cir. Sept. 17, 2007). Jocelyn is also currently working with Lambda Legal on a case of first impression regarding Wisconsin's hate crime statute.
Before joining McDermott, Jocelyn served as a law clerk for the Honorable Margaret M. Morrow, U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. She also worked as an associate in the commercial litigation department of a large law firm in Milwaukee. Before attending law school, Jocelyn taught high school civics and history in Jackson, Louisiana as a member of Teach for America.
While in law school, Jocelyn was elected to Order of the Coif and served as an editor for the Moot Court Board. She also completed internships with the Honorable John G. Koeltl, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, and the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York.
Jocelyn is a member of the Illinois and Wisconsin bars. She is admitted to practice in the Seventh Circuit, the Northern District of Illinois, the Eastern District of Michigan, and the Eastern District of Wisconsin. She is a member of the American Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association, and the Federal Bar Association
Representative Experience:
Defending a national accounting firm in malpractice litigation relating to the promotion of allegedly abusive tax shelters
Representing and counseling the Special Committee of an international medical products and service corporation during an internal investigation
Defending a nationally-known author in fifteen consolidated class actions alleging claims of fraud and misrepresentation
Defending a national home-improvement chain against environmental criminal charges
Representing corporate employees in civil and criminal investigations stemming from possible violations of securities laws
