John A. Cashman is a Regional Practice Manager for the Partner Group located in Major, Lindsey & Africa's Chicago office. John's practice at MLA focuses on representing individual partners and associates in the lateral marketplace, practice group acquisitions, law firm mergers and exclusive general counsel searches. His clients include many of the country's best national law firms, large public and private companies and numerous regional and local law firms in the Midwest and elsewhere.
During his career as a legal search consultant at MLA, John has placed numerous partners and associates with major U.S. firms, completed retained partner searches for several national law firms, and helped Navigant Consulting, Inc. (NCI) and GTCR Golder Rauner hire their most recent General Counsels.
John's experience as an M&A partner with a major international law firm is a tremendous asset to both clients and candidates, as John brings to his work as a legal search consultant a sophisticated understanding of the issues faced by law firms and partners in building, evaluating and moving practices.
Prior to joining MLA, John was a corporate partner in the Chicago office of Winston & Strawn. John received his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School in 1994, where he graduated with Honors and was a John M. Olin Scholar in law and economics. He received a B.B.A. in finance from the University of Washington in 1987. Before attending law school, John was a Vice President at City National Bank in Beverly Hills, California.
John lives in the Chicago suburb of Clarendon Hills with his wife, Christi, who is a real estate partner at a major Chicago law firm, and their children. In his spare time John plays golf and is a member of the Board of Directors of Illinois Legal Aid Online, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing access to justice for lower-income Illinois residents through the use of technology.
