John B. Russell, Jr.'s career as a trial lawyer has been centered on complicated, document intensive cases. His experience as a fraud prosecutor at both the state and federal levels has prepared him to handle complex RICO cases, both civil and criminal.
His professional and personable relationships with his clients have earned him their trust and respect, and his reputation among his fellow lawyers earned him a place among Virginia Business Magazine's 2003, 2006 and 2007 "Legal Elite" in the area of criminal law. Mr. Russell is also named in Law & Politics Super Lawyers in the category of White Collar Criminal Defense.
While with the State, Mr. Russell supervised investigations and prosecuted cases from Lee County to Arlington and Virginia Beach. He was the lead attorney on six securities fraud prosecutions of key members of Lyndon LaRouche's organization. These trials each lasted from five to twelve weeks and all ended in convictions.
Since he has been in private practice, Mr. Russell has represented a variety of health care providers undergoing scrutiny from government insurers (Medicare, Medicaid, etc.), often successfully resolving matters without civil or criminal sanctions being sought.
He has also defended both civil and criminal RICO and forfeiture cases and represented plaintiffs in commercial litigation and benefit denial cases against insurers.
Personal Background:
Mr. Russell received his law degree from the T. C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond where he was Executive Editor of the Law Review and earned his undergraduate degree from Washington & Lee University where he double majored in Economics and Political Science.
His 18 years as a state and federal prosecutor included positions as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Western District of Virginia and a Senior Assistant Attorney General and Chief of Virginia's Investigative and Enforcement Section that included the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.
He received the Distinguished Faculty award from the National College of District Attorneys where he lectured extensively in areas of fraud, money laundering, forfeiture and documentary evidence
